I hate the new FaceBook layout and home page

Facebooks growth has been record breaking, recently in an attempt to take advantage of the popularity of Twitter’s micro blog market they have made some major changes to the sites interface.

These changes have not been taken well by a very vocal and dissatisfied community

My Myspace 2.0 page disapeared and its buggy!

Well Tom answered our questions yet again:

WHY DID MY LAYOUT FROM YESTERDAY STOP WORKING TODAY? Update 6:00pm PST, Nov 12 –
We had a bug during the night with layouts. If your PYZAM layout got wiped, go back and get it again. It should work now. If you are inputting your own colors or creating your own stylesheets, you may notice that currently the pound sign is blocked. This is a mistake and we’re working on a fix for this.

HOW DO I GO BACK?

This was answered in my original blog post. From the Profile dropdown main menu (on the nav) choose “Customize Profile.” When the editor is loaded click the “Go Back” link in the top right. Then choose the 1.0 option. Don’t click it multiple times, or it’ll probably show an error (that’ll be fixed soon).

I DONT LIKE 2.0 BECAUSE I CANT USE LAYOUTS!

Wrong! You just can’t use 1.0 layouts! And, all layouts must be placed in the new CSS box. (You cannot put layout/css codes in the About Me, or anywhere else. They must go in the CSS box.)

I’M WAITING FOR SITES TO CREATE MYSPACE LAYOUTS BEFORE I SWITCH

Try Pyzam.com, they already have 2400 layouts — nearly all their 1.0 layouts to 2.0 Layouts! Here’s a direct link to their 2.0 page: http://www.pyzam.com/myspace2layouts

HOW DO I CHANGE THE 3 NEW PICS THAT APPEAR NEAR THE TOP?

Each module has special features. To access them, click the pencil icon on the top right of the module. Once this opens up, click the text link (top right) “Edit Basic Information.” From there you can choose your 3 photos. There’s a bug on small screen sizes where you can’t see the “Save Changes” button that sits underneath the 3 photos. If you can’t see it on your screen, just go to the regular Edit Profile link from the nav menu or home page – not, the customize page, just the regular edit profile page. The Edit profile link lets you edit your profile information (without using any customization options). Since its not in a popup window, you’ll be able to save the three photos here.

HOW DO I CHANGE THE NUMBER OF TOP FRIENDS?

Click the pencil in the right corner of the friends module. You’ll be able to set the number of friends you’d like to display. To change the friends that actually appear there, you still need to go to friends and click the “Change Top Friends” link.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY BACKGROUND IMAGE?

Click “Advanced Edit,” then choose “Background.” Copy & Paste the link to the background image you want to use in the “URL” field . Then click PREVIEW to see if your image appeared properly.

WHY CAN’T I USE BASIC HTML IN EACH PROFILE SECTION? LIKE CENTER?

Some basic tags, like b, i, and center are being improperly filtered. We’re converting b and i to strong and em and will have them working Wednesday morning. We’re still working on center, and hope to have a fix next week.

HOW DO I MAKE MY 2.0 PROFILE PRIVATE?

With 2.0 there is no longer a single privacy on & off switch that affects the whole profile. (Your “My Account/Privacy” setting no longer applies once you convert to 2.0). Instead, you need to set the privacy on a module by module basis. The idea is you can show some things to the public, and other things to friends only. You can even show certain modules to specific categories of friends you’ve created on the friends page “my categories” tab. To set the privacy for a module, click the pencil in the top right, then click the radio button to choose who can see the module. Check the box “apply to all modules” if you want to make your whole profile viewable to the category you just selected.

There are little bugs here and there that were revealed when things went live to the whole site this morning. We are going to roll out a fix for several bugs Wednesday morning, November 12th (should be done by 10am). That said, the bugs are minor and you should be able to have a lot of fun with 2.0 right now. Try it out. 🙂

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=6221&blogID=447981362 By the one and only Tom, I think Myspace users should check his page more often when they have problems!

If you read through youll see that the answer to most of your problems is “were working on it.” it would make sense that such a massive recode would have issues to work out. Guess what your the test dummies.

Privacy is set at a module by module basis, and 2.0 layouts are already rather prolific at pzyam.com website, I have links in the previous myspace post, look to the right to find the myspace category.

Personally, I no longer spend much time on Myspace, my addiction has moved on to dating websites.
Heres my favorite right now.

How to go back to Profile 1.0 Myspace

After yesterdays announcement many Myspacers are attempting to create their profiles in 2.0.

But, many of us have spent hours if not days using the previous format to get exactly the design we wanted.

Worried that you may have lost your old space?

Dont be, after selecting “upgrade to profile 2.0” the myspace server will still save your old page for 90 days.

While in the new edit module, viewable in the screenshot below select “Go Back” this probably confuses all of us as we are used to “going back” a page, but in this case selecting that will bring up
the next screenshot

You will see a link that says “switch back to 1.0”

Thats it!

According to Myspace:

* Profile 2.0 gives you granular control over privacy, and enhanced customization options.
* Hide your comments, friends, age, last login, and more.
* Make parts of your profile visible to specific groups of friends (friend categories).
* New themes to style your page without any knowledge of HTML or pasting codes.
* Profile 2.0 loads faster and has a sleeker, more modern look.

Remember, you can always go back to your current profile if you don’t like it. Enjoy!

So dont worry, here is a screenshot of the new design module in case you havent tried it yet.

Its only been out a couple of hours at the time of this post, it seems at this time to be a great tool for those who never took the time to learn the html and css required for the old Profile 1.0 but with a perfunctory inspection, I still havent figured out where to enter my html and content and quite frankly the layout and theme generator is no better than the third party ones we are already used to.

Anyone familiar with facebook will be completely accustomed to the add module features and the drag and drop ordering.

You can enter your own CSS and the layout generator allows you enter a background and place it also features for text color and the like, but how do I insert my flash video or ebay widgets and other code?

Well that was a mystery to me until I gave up, apparently the new dashboard you see after first upgrading isnt your only edit view. After you publish your new layout and go back to your home page (not your profile page) the edit profile link leads to the exact same 5 box – about me, who id like to meet, music etc. So there still is a location for entering html (A question Ive seen on the net already)

But remember you can not enter CSS (Cascading style sheets) anywhere except for the module called CSS

In my case Ill keep 1.0 as I have learned to edit and design it any way I please, the screenshots I posted come from my test page that I use to display clients designs before they are approved

Ill keep you posted.

In conclusion my advice is breath! Yes its different but its still myspace after 10-20 minutes of fooling around with the options, you will understand.

In case you do decide to keep your Myspace 2.0 profile, pre-made layouts do already exist here are some examples

Not specifically for 2.0 but the best layout styles and codes your going to find regardless of edition, div and flash based templates and resources
